As the phrase goes, there are two reasons organisations are disrupted; one; because they didn't see disruption coming or two; because they saw it coming and did nothing. Shareholders can forgive executives for the first, but not for the second.


Amazon is the prototype of this kind of enterprise. An online bookseller has transformed into one of the largest sales portals on earth, but also their server services, and not least of all, data and analytics services.


311 Institute talks about The Three Horizons in their publication Exponential Enterprises. From their publication, they show that most companies live in the first horizon space. They are in a race to play catch-up and survival as industries evolve and markets change. With the exponential rate of change upon us, businesses need to look into the future to know where to drive their business activities today, not tomorrow.


One of the big challenges is leaving the comfort zone and thinking big enough. What is the purpose of the business now and what do the stakeholders want to have as the purpose in the future 10 years ahead?
